To the editor:
Heavy trucks carrying logs, lumber, oil and gas equipment and coal routinely ignore the speed limits along state Routes 43 and 164 in the western part of Jefferson County. This law-breaking has become so common that some news outlets don't even cover serious accidents. A case in point involved a truck transporting logs through East Springfield on the afternoon of Nov. 12.
To be sure, large trucks are not the only violators of our traffic laws. Our local roads have never been more dangerous. A semi-truck carrying a load of logs or other heavy cargo can do so much more damage than a regular passenger car.
I ask all drivers and the owners and managers of logging, coal and oil and gas companies to please correct this affront to public safety before it's too late.
