To the editor:
Had I known when I voted for the renewal levy for the City of Steubenville about the plans to close Belleview Pool and to perhaps close the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, I would have never had voted in favor of it.
Please, City Manager Cathy Davison and members of city council, realize that new industry is coming to our area - new jobs, new blood. What will we have to offer? Deteriorated housing, poor roads, bad attitudes and sub-par schools? What will draw new people to this area? What will keep them?
This is poor planning on the part of this city manager and the previous city managers. We need to realize that money from the steel mills is gone, and that those days are past.
Look to Pittsburgh for examples of how to rise up and maintain the few recreational facilities we have remaining.
Please do not close the pool. We have already sold our golf course and closed the pool at Beatty Park. What else can be sold? How about making some of the managers of departments in the city take pay cuts? Once the assets are gone, they are gone with no hope of getting them back.
