STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's basketball team dropped a 69-57 decision to Oberlin College Saturday at the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
The Barons, down to nine healthy players, seven of whom are new to the program, couldn't overcome a 14-point first half deficit.
"We're still trying to learn and figure out our groove," head coach John Lamanna said. "The pieces are here but we're still learning each other. Every game is new for us."
SIDELINE MEETING — Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s basketball coach John Lamanna (with clipboard) talks to his team during a timeout in Saturday’s 69-57 loss to Oberlin College at the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
FUS managed to force 23 turnovers and had two players score over 15 points, but also made a number of mental mistakes on both sides of court.
"That's what we're working on, trying to increase our consistency of play," said Lamanna. "It's a youth thing. It's a lack of leadership on the floor. So we're trying to figure out who's gonna step up within that program."
Buckeye Local graduate Joe Rine scored 17 points and led the team with seven rebounds while Weir High product Justin Horstman scored a game-high 20 points.
While injuries and youth continue to provide an added challenge for the Barons, Lamanna said he is confident that his team will continue to fight through it, and continue to improve.
"I feel really good about how we'll be able to respond," Lamanna said. "This group of guys has always responded to every challenge we've had this year and its gonna come for us."
The Barons host Penn State-Altoona at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
