Church of Christ, Scientist
The 98th-annual Thanksgiving Day service will be held at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Steubenville, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The one-hour service will include music; thanksgiving-related readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook; and the president of the United States' annual Thanksgiving proclamation.
The service also will include a time for those in attendance to share their expressions of gratitude for God's goodness, grace, abundance and protection. No collection will be taken.
The church is located at 600 Lovers Lane, Steubenville. Juice, hot drinks and doughnuts will be available before the service.
In Thanksgiving for God's guidance and protection during the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem, people were invited to the dedication of the wall, as the gates were being hung upon the hinges, and the people sang and gave thanks (Nehemiah 12).
"The psalmists tell us to enter into his gates with thanksgiving and to sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving (Psalms 100, 147). Years later, Paul, in so many words, reminds us that it's God's riches and bounty being poured upon us that causes thanksgiving (II Cor. 9). Today, evidence is mounting, suggesting genuine expressions of thanksgiving and gratitude still have the power to heal and transform lives, just as they did in Old and New Testaments days," a spokesman said.
