To the editor:
I met Billy Petrella when he was graduating from high school, and I was instantly l impressed with his outgoing personality, positive attitude and maturity beyond his 18 years. I was working at (the then) Jefferson Community College as a coordinator of campus activities when I realized he had enrolled and immediately encouraged him to join Student Senate and run for president, which he did. I saw his leadership skills blossom and was quite amazed when he single-handedly organized an educational forum on campus. He invited then-Gov. Bob Taft and other state and local dignitaries to discuss the reasons why it was so important to keep the funding for two-year colleges. There I was, impressed again.
He went on to college and has degrees in leadership and development and financing. Now, he is running for Jefferson County commissioner, and, once again, I am impressed. The leadership skills that he obtained in college, and as a board member for several local organizations, as well as his business and financial investment expertise, will help him succeed in making Jefferson County a business-friendly place where investors will want to come.
He wants to invest money obtained from the oil and gas industry to assist in our economic development and offer diversity to Jefferson County. We have never really invested or had enough money to invest in economic development in a large way. This is our chance. Again, I'm very impressed. He deserves a chance and your vote.
