VAN DYKE, Helen Elizabeth, 106, of Toronto (Sugar Grove), OH, passed away at her home October 21, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born February 3, 1906, in Empire, OH, the daughter of the late Charles Lemon and Vinnie Reme Adams Vance.
Helen was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church; Toronto Order of Eastern Star No. 215; Toronto Daughters of America; the Empire Pythian Sisters and was a charter member of the Stanton Community Choir. She played piano for the church and all the organizations she belonged to and taught piano lessons. She was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan.
She had worked at and was co-owner of the former Van Dyke Service Station in Sugar Grove along with her husband, Elmer "Pete" Van Dyke.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer La Mont "Pete" Van Dyke, who passed away in 1991 and whom she married October 26, 1929; brothers, Charles, James, and Wilmont "Duke" Vance.
She is survived by: son, Robert Allen (Connie) Van Dyke of Toronto (Sugar Grove), OH; daughters, Shirley Jean Bartels of Toronto (Sugar Grove), OH and Anna Mary (Terry) Noreus of Phoenix, AZ grandchildren, Barry (Charisse) Metz of Phoenix, AZ, Deborah (Floyd) Sturdevant of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sharon Joseph and companion, Skip Graef of Enon Valley, PA, Natalie (Ryan) Carey of Dayton, OH and Robert (Stephanie) Van Dyke of Uniontown, OH; great-grandchildren, Dana, Teisha, Kailin, Kelsey, Robert, Russell, Skylar, Gavin and Sheri; great-great-grandchildren, Joven and Haley.
Friends and family will gather for visitation 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 23rd at the Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main Street, Toronto and from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 24th at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, County Road 68 Toronto (Sugar Grove).
A celebration service of Helen's life will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday at the church with Pastor Robert Welch officiating. Burial will follow at the Sugar Grove Union Cemetery.
