Brooke beats Red Riders

WEIRTON - The Brooke girls soccer team defeated Weir 3-0 Thursday at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

Mekenzie DeFranco, Shelby Cronin and Michaela Hinerman all found the back of the net for the Bruins. Hinerman was joined by Cheyenne Hudson and Sarah Hardsouk in dishing out an assist. Marena Cline earned the shut out with three saves in goal.

The Red Riders used a pair of players in net with Alyssa Kelly saving nine shots and Nicole Pellegrino stopping five.

Redskins ground Jets

WINTERSVILLE - The Indian Creek volleyball team swept Union Local 25-8, 25-22, 25-9 Thursday.

The Redskins (18-2) received nine kills and six digs from Whitney Martin, four digs from Ali Collaros, three digs from Mallorie Sullivan and three digs and three blocks from Alexis Fithen.

Jessica Furda led the way with 20 assists, seven aces, two kills and 17 digs, with Brey Mays adding four aces, six kills and six digs; Bre Berryman contributing eight kills, two blocks and two digs; and Kiarra Kamarec chipping in three kills, two blocks and three digs.

The Jets were led by Carly Schafer's seven digs, eight assists, and two blocks with Shayla Otto adding two aces, seven digs, three kills and two blocks.

Big Red blanks Carrollton

STEUBENVILLE - The Big Red boys soccer team topped Carrollton 4-0 Thursday at Harding Stadium on a night to support the fight against breast cancer.

Nate Kurty, Shane Fabros, Jorge Dominguez and Brandon Llewellyn each scored a goal for Steubenville. Llewellyn also added an assist with Stefano Lanni assisting on a pair of goals. John Paul Duff had two saves in the shut out.

Carrollton goalie Tyler Krantz turned away 16 shots in the loss.

Big Red (9-5-2) takes on Edison Wednesday at 6 p.m. in sectional play at Harding Stadium.

Brooke drops three

SISTERVILLE - The Brooke volleyball team dropped matches to Morgantown (25-11, 25-17), Parkersburg South (25-18, 25-12), and host Tyler Consolidated (25-14, 25-17) in a quad-match Thursday.

Against Morgantown, Samantha Mazzone had three assists and two aces for the Bruins with Isabella Preston adding four kills, Angela Staffileno adding four kills and five blocks and Emily Stuck adding 11 digs.

Mazzone had six assists vs. Parkersburg South while Prestion had three kills and five digs, Kourtney Leonard had three kills and two digs, Staffileno had four kills and four blocks, Stuck had 10 digs and Kourtney Koscevic had three blocks.

The match against Tyler Consolidated saw Mazzone pick up seven assists, Preston two aces, Leonard two kills, Staffileno seven kills, Stuck eight assists and Koscevic three kills.

Brooke (2-20) travels to Magnolia Tuesday.
