Pet blessing

October 7, 2012
The Herald-Star
Franciscan University of Steubenville offered a St. Francis of Assisi’s traditional blessing of the animals during homecoming weekend on Saturday. University Chaplain Father Dominic Scotto, TOR, blessed pets belonging to, from left, Bernie and Joanne Boyle of Steubenville, with Riley, and Casey Oliver of Weirton, with Bodhi and Saint. The blessing outside the Portiuncula Chapel included a sprinkling with holy water and a prayer that the animals continue to reveal God’s love and presence to the world. Well known for his love for animals, St. Francis himself blessed a wolf that was terrorizing the Italian town of Gubbio. After the blessing, the wolf no longer threatened the townspeople. -- Mark Law
