The Ohio Valley is known for its community celebrations and traditions, and few traditions are as well known locally as the Wellsburg Applefest.
The festival, which celebrates the area's connections to both the Grimes Golden apple and the legend of Johnny Appleseed, is making its return for the 34th year this weekend, and it is sure to be an event everyone will enjoy.
The apple is central to our local event, with pies, fritters, apple butter, cider and other goodies available as far as anyone can see.
We can't forget the baking competitions either. Now known as the Apple for Everyone Contest, and sponsored by Mullenbach Funeral Home, the contest will take place Sunday and will include a variety of apple dishes, with everything from cakes to pies to cookies to applesauce vying for a prize.
There's much more though, with lots of entertainment, the Wellsburg Applefest Pageant, with special guest Miss West Virginia Kaitlin Gates, and a variety of fall-themed activities like pumpkin decorating and carving contests.
Residents also can take some time to get a sneak peek at the new location for the Brooke County Museum, which will open its doors during the festival to show residents the progress being made at its future home.
The Wellsburg Applefest is a true Ohio Valley tradition, and we are sure it will, once again, be a true success.
