POINT PLEASANT - First-year Brooke football coach Sean Blummette was playing the same song over and over to his young squad this past week.

Come the second half Friday night at Point Pleasant, it sunk in.

On fourth down with 1:24 left in the game, Alec Buchmelter scored on a 1-yard run to lift Brooke to victory at Point Pleasant.

Brooke, which trailed 27-14 at halftime, faced a 33-28 deficit in the game's final minutes and had a first-and-goal at the Point Pleasant 1. The Bruins (1-5), however, needed four tries to score, giving them their first victory of the season.

"I think we might finally get back on the ground by the time we get to Wellsburg," Blumette said. "We got the monkey off our backs. This is a huge win for team and huge for the program. It was great to see the guys stay with it, believe in the system and execute and get the job done.

"Point Pleasant is a good football team. You can't help good teams and we did that in the first half. We didn't do that in the second half.

"This was a complete team effort in every aspect of the game. We gave them short fields in the first half and you can't expect your defense to be on the field that long. Our defense played their butts off. We started creating turnovers. We ran to the ball and tackled a lot better.

"We thought we matched up pretty well with these guys and we took advantage of it, especially in the second half."

The Bruins had struggled in the previous three weeks, after an opening 35-34 loss to Parkersburg. And, struggled in the first half Friday night. Point Pleasant (4-1), which started the night ranked No. 4 in Class AAA, took a quick 13-0 lead on Tylun Campbell's 5-yard run and Marquez Griffin's 40-yarder.

"We came out in the second half and did the same things we did in the first half, we just executed a lot better and eliminated the mistakes," said Blumette. "We looked at them after the game and said, 'what did we change?' We didn't put in a new offense or defense, we just executed the plays we knew we would work. The line started to come together. We ran the ball between the tackles. If we ran the ball 30 times tonight, we ran between the tackles on 22 of them. We ran right at them.

"There was a lot of fullback, tailback, quarterback power game. When you get your quarterback four rushing touchdowns, you are doing something right."

Blumette also said there was a discussion with senior three-year starter Alec Buchmelter at halftime.

"He got the message and came out in the second half and played like the quarterback we know that he is," said the coach. "We did not have a dropped pass in the second half and we had three or four in the first half. We had one penalty in the second half.

"We did it tonight as a team, as a program and we did it the right way. We went back to what Brooke football is. We pulled one out in the fourth quarter and that is something that's always been a trademark of Brooke.

"There is no secret here. What we are doing isn't brain surgery. The scheme is there. We just have to go out and execute and we did that tonight in the second half."

Buchmelter scored three times on runs of 28, 2 and 1 yard and completed a 51-yard pass to Thomas Cole.
