CASAGRANDA, John R. "Bob," 84, of Flats Cemetery Road, New Manchester, West Virginia, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at 9:30 p.m. at Mercy Hospital after suddenly taking ill Tuesday afternoon.
Born in McDonald, Pennsylvania, February 25, 1928, he was a son of the late John and Columba Springetti Casagranda.
A resident of New Manchester most of his life, he was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. For 35.5 years he worked at Weirton Steel as a roller on the skin mill until retiring.
A member of Holy Trinity Parish, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Weirton and the Holy Name Society at Immaculate Conception in New Cumberland. He was also a member of the 25 Year Club of Weirton Steel. John could usually be found puttering around and working on new inventions.
His wife, Betty Murphy Casagranda, survives at home. The couple married November 12, 1948. There are three daughters, Mary Jane Johnson, and her husband Edward, of Peoria, Arizona, Brenda Porter, and her husband Jack, of New Cumberland, and Nancy Folmsbee, and her husband John, of Accident, Maryland.
He also leaves behind five loving grandchildren, Tony Murray, and his wife Lynn, of Livermore, California, Jaclyn Porter of Tampa, Kyle Porter of Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, Abraham Folmsbee of Accident, Maryland and Avalon Folmsbee of Accident, Maryland; as well as a great-granddaughter, Taylor Murray of Peoria, Arizona.
In addition, he is survived by three sisters, Jean Groves of New Manchester, Betty Stoker, and her husband Ralph, of New Cumberland, and Mary Arnas, and her husband George, of Warren, Ohio, as well as a brother, William Casagranda, and his wife Beverly, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Casagranda and two sisters, Rose Pethtel and Dorothy Klein.
Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Fr. Peter Haladej will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship and continued remembrance.
Burial will be at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Burgettstown.
