What do wearing orange, yelling "go, go, go!" and discovering the word "fizgig" all have to do with each other?
You guessed it - or maybe not.
They're the makings for today's column.
I wore an orange shirt and scarf to work the other day and realized something - orange is one of those colors that prompts comments, no matter what month it is.
I was wearing black pants with the orange shirt and scarf, an outfit that generated the following observations:
"Janice is now modeling her fall line."
"You're looking very pumpkinish today."
"That reminds me - we're supposed to start collecting trick-or-treat hours."
I don't have a lot of orange clothes, but I can always count on comments when I wear them, summer or fall. Orange is more of a season, not just a color.
Ditto for yellow, another color for commentary. Or reaction.
People shield their eyes from all that brightness and sunshine.
Or fondly mention Sesame Street.
Earlier in the week you'd have thought I was wearing black and gold, though, - not orange.
It was the night the Pittsburgh Steelers were playing.
Better Half was watching the game in the living room, cheering "go, go, go" with great emotion.
I was watching television, too, in the bedroom.
And I was cheering "go, go, go," as well, also with great conviction.
It was enough to make Better Half check up on me, curious to find out what was behind the "rah, rah, rah" since I'm not a football person.
I was tuned in to Animal Planet, an episode about sea turtles.
It was the part about the newly hatched turtles trying to make their way to the ocean before a predator had them for a snack.
"Go, go, go!!!" I was rooting for this one especially determined little turtle going as fast as a little turtle could plow through the sand. Destination - water. Mission - avoid being lunch.
The little turtle made it, thank God.
In my book, it was as good as any touchdown.
But turtle cheering and orange wearing in no way make me a "fizgig," I don't think, which is a frivolous, giddy woman, according to the dictionary.
Or a firework that produces a hissing or sputtering sound.
We have this daily tradition of opening the dictionary to discover a new word. Fizgig just so happened to be one of them this past week.
Learning new words builds character, I say.
Ditto for wearing orange and being a turtle cheerleader.
