To the editor:
State Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, deserves our support and our votes in the November election. He was a tireless advocate for Southeastern Ohio while a member of the Ohio House, working with Republicans and Democrats alike to jointly sponsor two bills, which passed unanimously. The first bill supported Ohio farmers who chose to produce electricity on their farms by providing tax incentives. The second bill was co-sponsored with Rep. John Carey, a Republican, and helped provide clean drinking water to rural communities across the state, including here in the Ohio Valley.
As a state senator, Gentile continues working with enthusiasm and passion for the people he represents. His commitment to the people of Southeastern Ohio is reflected in the legislation he has worked on, such as the Ohio Workers First Amendment. This amendment strongly encourages out-of-state oil and gas companies to hire local workers and to use local small businesses as the natural resources here are developed.
In addition to Gentile's efforts to promote opportunities in our communities, he has fought against the efforts of extreme politicians in our state who want to take away workers' rights, who want to destroy public education by reducing funding and who want to decimate local government services. One such proposal by Gov. John Kasich will raise property taxes on landowners in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio. This revenue will then be used to fund an income tax cut for people living in wealthier communities. I believe, and so does Gentile, that this will be detrimental to our communities and take wealth created in our part of the state away from families and communities that are struggling.
I am voting for Gentile, not only because of what he believes in and the work he already has done, but because I trust him to represent our interests in Columbus - our interests, our communities and our people, not special interest groups. As a mother, I know he fights for an excellent education for all our children. Gentile listens to his constituents; he is approachable, honest and fair. He is committed to serving our community.
I strongly urge you to join me in voting for Gentile for state senator in November.
