STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's volleyball team dropped to .500 on the season after a 25-14, 30-32, 25-8, 22-25, 15-11 loss to Muskingum Wednesday in the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
"We played very well," said FUS head coach Kelly Herrmann, referring to the second game. "When you get down early, sometimes you need the other team to make more errors."
Muskingum played aggressive and nearly error free in game three, dominating the Lady Barons, 25-8.
"Going into the fourth game, we needed to think of something positive," Herrmann said. "We have faithful young women who do not put more pressure on the game than there needs to be."
In game four, the Lady Barons relied on their defense to come away victorious and force a fifth game. Sam Kelly had 29 digs, Laura Holley had 28 digs and Christina Lawrence pitched in with 20 digs. Offensively, senior, Anna Cain led her team with 21 kills.
"We needed to feed the beast," Herrmann said. "Anna is our best player and we need to keep going to her."
The Lady Barons were up 8-3 in the fifth game, but let the lead slip away as they were defeated 15-11.
Regardless, Herrmann is proud of her team and says that this is a better team than what was on the court last year.
"Our defense is a lot better, and our offense is much more balanced," Herrmann said.
This game also marked the first game in FUS history that was streamed live on the Internet. The athletic department will continue to steam all volleyball home matches as well as home games for men's and women's basketball. Check www.franciscanathletics.com for posted links.
