To the editor:
We finally have a choice in Jefferson County. There will be two candidates on the ballot in November for state Senate District 30. Shane Thompson, a 42-year-old businessman from Belmont County, is an excellent choice. I have met and spoken with Shane several times, and I am very impressed. He has all of the attributes and experience to make a great state senator for our district. A committed family man, Shane believes in the sanctity of life. He and his wife are devoted parents of two sons. My impression is that Shane is running to have the opportunity to help make a better Ohio not only for his children but ours.
Shane has real world experience and is a military veteran, having served in the Ohio National Guard, then the Army Reserves. Currently he is vice president at RBRC - a rechargeable battery corporation which has been named a model of public and private collaboration for the safe take back and recycling of batteries. It is the largest such recycling operation in North America.
Previously, he worked at INCO Ltd., a world leader in the mining and metals industry, where he facilitated problem resolution and strategic planning in mines all over the world.
His core beliefs are those most of us can agree on. He is a fiscal conservative and believes there is need to reduce the size of government and to mandate a balanced budget, which is paramount to restoring confidence in our economy and a fairer tax system. His plan is to increase the tax base through job creation while lowering the taxes for all of us.
A strong proponent of small business growth, Thompson is the only candidate to be endorsed by the NFIB, the voice of small business. He believes the oil and gas industry boom in our area is a game-changer for our economy and should be developed to its full potential, and that our district seems to be at the heart of it all. Whether it's logistics for transport of products or the layering of jobs created for our local work force, we have it all here. Shane has viable solutions to ensure that our work force is trained to provide the labor for those jobs. This boom will be a shot in the arm for all businesses to include real estate agents, store owners, contractors, restaurants and car dealers.
I look for several things in a candidate before I decide how I may cast my vote in November; character, experience, intelligence, problem -solving and passion for the job and the mission. Shane possesses all of these attributes. I believe that Shane Thompson is the clearest choice for Ohio Senate in some time. I hope he has the opportunity to lead the 30th District to a more prosperous and brighter future.
