Some of the Tri-State Area's youth soccer players will be displaying their prowess today and Sunday at the Jefferson County Kiwanis Club Youth Soccer Complex.
They will be in town to participate in the third-annual Riverview Soccer Spectacular.
The event, which will feature play from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the fields located next to the Jefferson County Airpark, has attracted at least 20 teams and about 300 players.
While the event figures to be two days of high-quality soccer and camaraderie, it also offers a chance to show off one of the region's top soccer facilities and give the area economy a shot in the arm.
Credit for making the spectacular possible goes to co-organizer Dr. Himanshu Desai and his loyal group of volunteers, who have worked tirelessly to ensure a successful weekend.
The action on the fields will be only part of the story, however. Players and their families will stay in local hotels and eat in local restaurants this weekend. They will shop in local stores and buy gasoline from local retailers.
That's why the list of supporters includes the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Progress Alliance and the Steubenville Convention and Visitors Bureau. Major sponsors include the YES Team, Target Sports Shop, IBEW Local 246, Trinity Health System, DPS Penn, General Rental and the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times.
Desai and his co-organizers promise a great experience for players and their families along with casual fans of the sport. He said food and other concessions will be available at the complex, and a fun zone for children will offer a place to relax.
It adds up to a great weekend for soccer and a chance to show off the many good things our area has to offer to residents of our region.
And that's good for everyone.
