City should not fight

August 26, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

Please use good legal and common sense by removing any reference to religious symbols from your city logo. You are simply wasting taxpayer time and money by allowing religious right law firms to use this as a cause, because it is being done for the sole purpose of publicity.

There is no legal justification, in our constitutional democracy, to pursue this issue. We abide by rule of law, neither majority nor minority rule, and we have a clearly established principle of separation of church and state. It is such a simple, yet inherently fundamental principle that it casts our state in an embarrassing light when elected public officials fail to act according to its tenants.

This is a long legal battle which cannot be won and should not be won. All taxpayers must be represented with public money, and you simply cannot provide that representation through religious symbols of any kind.
