To the editor:
The Jefferson County commissioners have finally decided to have a public meeting on the debt owed the county water department by Smithfield, but they want to hold this meeting in Smithfield. That is ridiculous. This meeting should be held someplace like Eastern Gateway Community College. There are some people in the water system who don't know where Smithfield is, but they do know where the college is.
I wish the commissioners would quit worrying about Smithfield. Smithfield has its own government and will make its own decisions. The commissioners should be putting their concerns on the 7,000-plus customers in the county water system.
I only hope water customers will call the commissioners and tell them where they would prefer the meeting to be held. Your water rates will depend on their decisions.
Remember a few years ago when we banded together and stopped the commissioners from making some ridiculous decisions in our water department? Let's do it again.
And, please, attend this meeting when it is announced, wherever it is held.
