SMITHFIELD - In 1981, three members of the Carroll family had a picture taken together for the Herald-Star when each won supreme horsemanship awards in their respective age categories.
There was Brian, the eldest at 14-years; Bill, 12-years-old; and Barbara, 8-years-old. They were members of the Free Spirits 4-H Club and enjoyed horses the way many children did dogs and cats.
Their parents, Bob and Sharon Carroll, always had horses and Barbara started showing them in competition at an early age.

RON TURNER HONORED DURING PARADE — The late Ronald L. Turner, chief deputy of the Jefferson County sheriff’s department was named Grand Marshal of the 2012 Jefferson County Fair posthumously. Members of the Turner family filled the wagon driven by Dave McElwain of Bergholz to lead the annual parade Saturday morning through the fair grounds. The fair continues through today before closing ceremonies this evening. Additional fair photos on page 1B.
Fast forward to 2012 and Barbara Mazzaferro's girls, Taylor, 12; and Sarah, 10; and her brother, Bill's daughter, Elizabeth Carroll, all received horse showmanship awards in their age categories as well. They are members of the Lucky Leaf Livestock 4-H Club, where their parents, Bill and Barbara Mazzaferro; uncle and aunt, Bill and Dani Carroll; and aunt, Tammy Mazzaferro, serve as some of the club advisers.
"The competition is now back to a category that includes ages 8 through 19-years, as it was back when we were in 4-H. It came back as an "all ages category" last year. Before that it was separated into junior and senior categories.," Barbara Mazzaferro said.
She noted that Taylor started showing horses when she was 15-months-old; and Sarah did the same at 2-years.
Other awards earned by Taylor are first in horse showmanship,12-14; first in horse supreme showmanship, 8-19; first English equitation, 12-14; first swine supreme showmanship; and reserve champion hog.
Sarah's awards include first in horse showmanship, 8-11; second for horse supreme showmanship; and second for swine showmanship.
Elizabeth's honors are first place horse showmanship, 15-19; third in supreme showmanship; and fourth in showmanship in the hog category.
The fair concludes today but many exciting events will take place before the curtain falls on another season.
A Beautiful Baby Contest will be held at the Rozsa Pavilion at 1 p.m. This is after registration takes place at the gazebo at noon.Age categories are babies born in 2011, born in 2010, born in 2009 and born in 2008. No babies born in 2012 need apply.
The first contest will be a baby beautiful contest where girls and boys will be judged separately and the children must be dressed up. Trophies will be presented to each category and gift certificates will go to each first place winner only.
The second contest is a costume event where girls and boys will be judged together. They must be dressed in a costume and trophies only will be presented to the winners.
The contest is open to all counties.

Registration for the home talent demo derby will be at the grandstand at 4 p.m. The lawn mower demo derby registration will be at 5 p.m. and be held at 5:30 p.m. The home talent demo derby will be at the grandstand at 6 p.m.
