Weirton area residents have an opportunity to celebrate their heritage this weekend with the annual Festival of Nations, taking place Saturday at the Weirton Event Center.
Based on a concept initially brought to Weirton by E.T. Weir himself, the modern-day Festival of Nations was started in 2009 with the intention of reflecting on the Weirton area's cultural heritage and celebrating some of what makes this community unique.
Bringing together the traditional food, music and clothing of a variety of ethnicities that have served as the building blocks of this city from its earliest days as Holliday's Cove through the development of its steel industry to today, it provides a chance for us all to celebrate and learn.
Representations of a variety of nationalities, including India, the Phillipines, Germany, Greece, Italy, Serbia, Ireland and many others are expected and should offer something for everyone to enjoy.
The last few years have seen big crowds as residents watch the Parade of Nations, sample some food from around the globe and sit down to enjoy some music, and we know this Saturday afternoon will be no different. The Festival of Nations is a great event for everyone, and we encourage our residents to check it out.
For the last few years, the festival has been held in the gymnasium at the Millsop Community Center.
We feel an outdoor facility will definitely add some new elements to the celebration that will make it a memorable experience for everyone.
We thank the the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center, as well as all the volunteers, for once again making this event happen for our community.
