Brooke meeting date changed

The Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women's monthly meeting has been changed to Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Follansbee Library.

All members and interested Democratic women are encouraged to attend. Membership is being accepted for 2012-13.

Shriners hold

'Tabloid Day'

The Steubenville Shrine Club recently held its "Tabloid Day" on the roadway in front of Riesbeck's Food Market in Wintersville.

"We would like to thank the area residents who contributed and made this a success," a club spokesman said.

"We would like to take this opportunity to inform the public that if you have or know of a child between the ages of newborn to 18 with special medical needs, regardless of their ability to pay, we may be able to help. Shriners Children's Hospitals provide medical treatment for the following: orthopedics, burn cases, cleft lip and palate, and spinal cord injuries," the spokesman said.

The Steubenville Rotary Club, which meets at noon on Fridays at the YWCA for a luncheon business meeting, has announced the following speakers for August:

Friday: John Cucarese, New York Life Financial Service professional, will share his thoughts on what people can do with their money during the current volatility in the marketplace;

Aug. 17: Jim Emmerling, assisted by six team captains, will prepare club members for "Rotary Radio Days."

Aug. 24: Barry Gullen, president of the Ohio High School Athletic Association East District Athletic Board, will detail the football format for the new state playoffs.

Aug. 31: Mary Kathryn McVey, chair of education at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, will discuss how to educate good teachers.

Mike McVey, the club's president-elect, is August program chair.

Mingo center

lists winners

The Mingo Junction Senior Center has announced winners from activities held during its annual picnic held July 26 at Aracoma Park.

Winners were: Darlene Hoagland, hula hoop contest; Jo Ann Sauvain, twist contest; and Joyce Rawson, Robin Hardy, Frankie Darrah and Hoagland, costume contest.

The center is sponsoring a trip to Cincinnati and Louisville on Oct. 1-3 with seats remaining. For information on it or other day trips, contact Suzie Zorbini, center director, at (740) 535-1639.

Weirton Hospital

Retirees to meet

Weirton Hospital Retirees will hold their last summer meeting at noon on Aug. 14 at Gio's in Weirton.

Luncheon reservations should be made by Wednesday by calling Cathy Colbert at (304) 723-2255 or the telephone committee person.

Members are encouraged to support the $5 jewelry sale sponsored by the Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary scheduled later in August with additional information available by calling Jean Duffy at (304) 748-6035.

At the last meeting Jeannie Kovolan was recognized as the birthday girl at the birthday celebration meeting. Linda Heilman offered birthday blessings to all members prior to the invocation.

Following the introduction of new member Winnie Kemp, President Donna Latkiewicz requested reports of committee chairpersons, including financial report, Rhadine Ross; sunshine report, Donna Karas; and membership report, Colbert.

Karas won the 50-50.

Latkiewicz announced that after having served as president for the past 10 years, she will officially retire Dec. 31.

Joyce Barnhart will continue to serve as vice president.

Picnic for former

plant employees

The 27th-annual picnic of the former Brilliant Plant of the Ohio Ferro Alloys will be held Aug. 18 at the Brilliant Community Park.

Dinner will be held at 12:30 p.m. with a short business meeting to follow.

Participants are asked to bring a covered dish, chairs and beverage.

No meat will be furnished this year.

Guests are welcome.

Those attending also are asked to bring items for a brown bag auction.

Support group

meetings set

Charity Hospice bereavement support group meetings will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at Blessed Sacrament's Sargus Hall in Wintersville and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Two Ridges Presbyterian Church in Wintersville.
