Arrest made in vehicle break-in
STEUBENVILLE - Zane Walker, 48, of 838 Market St., Yorkville, was arrested Sunday evening after a City Police officer caught him breaking into a county-owned vehicle parked in the 100 block of North Court Alley.
An officer reported hearing a vehicle alarm sounding on Court Alley shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. The officer reported seeing Walker inside the vehicle. Walker started running and ended up trying to hide inside a Dumpster at Speedway on Third Street, police reported. Walker used a rock to break a window on the county-owned vehicle, police reported. Walker was charged with felony vandalism and obstructing official business.
Man arrested after gun found under seat
STEUBENVILLE - Andrew M. Burton, 21, of Whitehall was arrested by City Police after a pistol was found under the seat of a vehicle he was driving Saturday evening, and he took off running through a storm drain near Beatty Park, City Police reported.
Burton was pulled over in the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue around 11:18 p.m. Saturday because of an expired vehicle registration. The officer searched the vehicle and found a pistol under a seat. Police reported Burton then took off running on Lincoln Avenue, into Beatty Park and then through a creek into a rainwater basin. An officer chased Burton in waist-high water until Burton ran out of energy and surrendered, police reported.
Burton was charged with having a weapon as a convicted felon, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, obstructing official business, possession of marijuana and expired registration.
PERI will meet Wednesday
WINTERSVILLE - Jefferson County Chapter 5, Public Employee Retirees, will hold its monthly meeting at noon Wednesday at Zalenski's.
Guest speaker will be Don Redmond of Toronto, who has made many missionary trips to Senegal, Africa.
Brooke school board calls special meeting
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday to consider the hiring of personnel for the upcoming school year.
Brooke park event moved to Wednesday
WELLSBURG - Brooke Hills Park's observation of National Kids Day has been moved to Wednesday due to inclement weather on Sunday.
The free event, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., will include a cardboard boat race, duck pluck contest, hot dogs, soft drinks and swimming.
For the race, teams of children and adults will make cardboard boats using materials provided by the park. The winners are those whose makeshift crafts stay afloat the longest in the park's pool.
