Safe driving class offered
WEIRTON -An AARP safe driving class will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10 at Christ United Methodist Church, 3598 Pennsylvania Ave.
Taught by Ralph Cox, the two-day class is geared toward older adults who may or may not be experiencing diminished vision, hearing and reaction time, all common to the aging process. Most insurance agencies offer a discount to those who have completed it.
The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for for non-members. It covers materials and must be paid in advance. Class space is limited, so reservations should be made by calling (304) 527-3410.
Library to show 'Holmes' film
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
The PG-13 rated film stars Robert Downey Jr. as the classic character in a battle of wits against the notorious Professor Moriarty.

Children's author to visit
WELLSBURG - Local children's author JoAnn Davis will read her new book, "Finding Pepper," at the Brooke County Public Library on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Davis was born and raised in the Ohio Valley and performed for 40 years with her former husband, Jimmy Stephens, at the WWVA Jamboree.

Poker run to benefit relay
WELLSBURG - The sixth-annual Relay for Life Poker Run will be held Aug. 18 by the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society Relay for Life's Footprints team.
Registration will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall on 12th Street. The first bikes will leave at 2 p.m. and the last will return at about 6 p.m.
The cost is $20 per motorcyclist and $10 for each additional rider.
For $10, non-bikers are welcome to join participants for dinner, soft drinks and entertainment at an end of run party at the banquet hall.
