To the editor:
I cannot express enough thanks to everyone who helped make the first Frank "Dude" Martin Golf Scramble at Spring Hill Golf Course a success. On May 1, we lost a son, a brother, a father and a friend. Martin also left behind four young children that will have a hard time remembering how funny, charming, adventurous and warm-hearted their dad could be. At Sunday's scramble, family, friends, former classmates, neighbors and strangers came together to raise more than $6,000 for Dude's children, Lane, Brady, Elliott and Lilly.
Event organizers Scooter Hayes, Mike Martin and Mort Piatt would like to recognize hole sponsors Frank Martin; Iris Martin; Wendel Reese; Susan Reese; Wink and Bev Reese; Bill and Louanne Martin; Mike and Dawn Speedy; Billie Fowler; Mike Wilson; Mike, Melinda and Kylie Martin; Scooter Hayes and family; Patty Redman; Sharon and Bo Kestner; Bob and Jan Holland; the Perkins family; Dan Hogue; Russ Easter and family; Ruth Kunkle; Mikey and Rosellen Adams; Jeff Bendle; Bud Cornell; Cynthia Nixon; Nelson Wells; Dave Vukelic; Rodger Goddard and family; Cory Johnston; Mark Kincaid and Babe and Ken Miller. as well as businesses Shooters; Old Skool; Frogs; Mobley's; Valley Converting; Lauttamus Communications; Cochrans Decorative Curbing; Conveyor Equipment and Supply; Y&C Construction; U.S. Bank; Forms and Systems; Davis Homes; Riverside Market; Chirps Auto Body; SVEC Embroidery; Dperyea & Co.; Toronto Lanes and Everhart Memorials.
Drawing prizes were donated by Wyngate Senior Living Community, Spring Hills Golf Course, Cynthia Nixon, Weirton Lumber, Davis Homes, Famous Supply, Split Rail and Feed, DeeJays, Abdalla's Steakhouse, Mike Chociej and Toronto Auto Parts. Gus's Goodies donated doughnuts for the early golfers. Mike Wilson, Reed and Christy Johnson, Iris Martin, Bev Reese and Melinda Martin helped by providing the food. Chuck Martin tended to the food and was an enormous help.
A lot of time, effort and hard work came together very quickly to make this event a success. None of it would have been possible without help from Melinda Martin, Danny and Vicky Filtz, Melanie Clark, Bert Turmel and Charlie Corder and his staff at Spring Hills Golf Course.
Congratulations to Duke Price, J.D. Hannan, Chris Conlon and Brian Chetock for winning the scramble. Thank you to all participants. We were hoping for 15 teams and we were pleased and surprised to have 27 teams participate. A very special thank you to Vince and Sarah Zastudil, Charlie Waggoner and Jim Slason for donating their skins game winnings back to the fundraiser.
With more time to plan and the date for next year already set (May 11), we are hoping to make this event bigger and better not only for those who participate, but also for Dude's children. Again, thank you so very much to each and every golfer, friend and family member who did so much to make this first golf scramble in memory of Dude a success. Words can't adequately express how much we miss him and how much your participation meant to all of us.
