catfish tourney set

The Chester-Newell Sportsman Club's catfish tournament will be from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday and Aug. 18. It is open to everyone and the entry fee is $10. Sign up is at Chaney's Sunoco in Chester. Call (304) 387-3982.

Helen McDiffitt

to mark 80th

Helen Parlier McDiffitt will celebrate her 80th birthday with a picnic at the Brilliant Community Center from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Her actual birthday is July 15.

She worked as a waitress and cook at the Coffee Pot Restaurant and at Schumacher's Market and Mulls Grocery Store in Brilliant, where she was a baker.

National contest deadline is Friday

The American Express Open and Facebook "Big Break for Small Businesses" national contest deadline is Friday. Five winners will receive house calls from American Express Open and Facebook branding experts who will conduct marketing makeovers and be presented $25,000 in cash to implement the social strategies they learn from the makeovers.

Winning businesses can invite other local entrepreneurs to meet a panel of social media and marketing experts to teach them how to use social channels for their business.

Small business entering will get educational and brand-building tools, as well as $50 in free Facebook advertising credits. American Express card members and merchants entering will receive $100 in Facebook advertising credits.

To enter, visit and submit answers to a short questionnaire. Ten finalists will be selected by judges, followed by a voting phase where fans of American Express and Facebook will chose five winners.

Weir Class of '48

planning luncheon

The Weir High School Class of 1948 will hold a luncheon gathering at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gio's Family Restaurant.

Those who attended high school with the class are invited to attend. The group will be ordering from the menu.

Country Friends host Sands of Time

Country Friends will host the Sands of Time at the Memorial Hall Saturday. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the dance begins at 7 p.m. Open mic is held each Monday and Friday. The doors open at 4 p.m. and a covered dish meal is at 5 p.m. Open mic is at 6 p.m.
