Brooke Hills Park runs smoothly

July 15, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

Summer is here and Brooke Hills Park has officially opened for the 2012 season. Each year, as we close our doors for the winter, we manage to thank the business and organizations that have helped us throughout our busy season, especially during the spookhouse.

This year we would like to take a moment to thank the "little guy," the people who work behind the scenes, the life blood of our park. These volunteers spend many long hours helping us to open our park for the summer.

Many thanks go out to our adviser, William Watson, who has always been a phone call away with legal advice. And thanks to our county commissioners and Sylvia Benzo for helping us through many crises. Special thanks to Joan Beck, Bill Smith, Bob Fowler and the safety committee for working to make our park a safe environment for our visitors and for our staff.

Many thanks to Peggy Mitchell and Wanda Jones. These special ladies have come to our aid numerous times, helping to cook and serve our guests, and to Ruby Greathouse, who devotes countless hours to help direct the park in all our ventures.

Also, thanks to Norm Schwertfeger and Jeff Van Camp and all of the members of the toll house committee for working to restore the building at the park's entrance, helping to preserve a small part of history.

Thanks to Davy and Sam Hubbard, for always being there when we are looking for equipment or need our utility lines traced throughout the grounds and for all of their guidance and help during our negotiations with Chesapeake. Thanks also to Alan and Patrick DeGarmo for always being happy to donate the bales of hay for our hayrides.

And a very special great big thank you goes out to the dynamic duo, George Shepard and Bob Law. These two extraordinary men have worked to keep our park's life-blood flowing by working to redo all the electric throughout the park and being just a phone call away whenever we needed something fixed. Special thanks to Bob Law, our tractor man, who not only volunteers many long hours at the park and at the fair, but has also lent us the use of his tractor and hay wagon when we have desperately needed the equipment.

Let us not forget our park vendors. Many put in a hard day's work to keep our park beautiful and then come out to volunteer at our park events. Special thanks to Melvin McGowan, Rhonda and Rodney Taylor and Jim Keener for always being a phone call away. We can not thank these individuals enough for all of their support and willingness to help our county park stay up and running. Take a moment to shake their hand and thank them for all that they do, as they, like many other unsung heroes, are what America and Brooke County are all about.
