STEUBENVILLE - Jefferson County Coroner Dr. Michael Scarpone has ruled 5-year-old Skyler Ellenberger died from smoke inhalation during a house fire last week in the city.
Ellenberger was trapped in her bedroom at the 362 Terrace Ave. home Thursday evening when a fire was discovered.
The girl's body was discovered Thursday evening in a second floor bedroom following the fire that partially destroyed a home.
Debbie Welsch, a spokesperson for the coroner's office, said Scarpone issued his ruling declaring an accidental death due to smoke inhalation following an autopsy performed by the Cuyahoga County medical examiner.
Funeral services for Ellenberger are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the James Funeral Home in Follansbee.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Sharlowe, a spokesperson for the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office, said investigators are continuing to examine the scene of the fatal fire.
"They have reported the fire is of an undetermined nature. It has not been ruled suspicious, and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the fire is encouraged to contact our office at (800) 589-2728. Any information might be significant," said Sharlowe.
City firefighters were called to the blaze Thursday evening.
The fire department reported the bedroom where the girl was found had the most extensive fire damage.
The Thursday fire was the third fatal fire this year in the city.
