Spelling bee lessons valuable

June 24, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Herald-Star and all other sponsors for sending my family and me on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for me to be able to compete in the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The entire family enjoyed the trip immensely, with so many great events to attend and historic sights to see. These many fun and enjoyable events included a barbecue, a tour of Washington, D.C., and an awards banquet, which were all held throughout the week. I myself made many new friends from various other states and countries and was able to enjoy so many different and interesting experiences that I will always remember and cherish. The competition itself was exciting and an honor to participate in. After making it to the semifinals, I finished in 22nd place out of 277 other spellers.

The competition has taught me many important principles that I will always keep with me for my future endeavors. The spelling bee has also taught me how to take successes and failures, and keep trying hard through great determination and perseverance that I was able to build up through my years of studying. The experience is one to last a lifetime, and I had the honor and privilege of being able to participate in the national bee twice.

In conclusion, I would like to, once again, thank the Herald-Star, all of the other sponsors of the spelling bee, and the entire community for all of the support with this wonderful, fascinating and challenging competition. I would also like to offer my help to the next Jefferson County Regional Bee champion to help this student prepare for the national level.
