STEUBENVILLE - A World War II era rocket-propelled grenade found by a resident digging in a yard in the 2500 block of Cleveland Avenue was taken to the Steubenville Marina and detonated Sunday, City Police reported.
The resident was working on a retaining wall around 3:30 p.m. and found a metal object in the ground, police reported. The resident used a pry bar to remove the item from the ground and realized it could be an explosive, police reported.
A city officer took the item, believed to be a rocket-propelled grenade, to the police station.
Police contacted and sent pictures to the Columbus Fire Department bomb disposal unit. The bomb disposal unit decided to travel to Steubenville and X-rayed the grenade. The X-ray showed a fuse and something inside the item, police reported.
The grenade was taken to the Steubenville Marina and detonated, police reported.
Traffic on the Veterans Memorial Bridge and state Route 7 was stopped for a period while the grenade was detonated.
