GUALTIERE, Michael, "Big Mike," died at the Laurels Nursing Home on Wednesday, June 13, 2012.
Michael was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Rocco Gualtiere and Mary Petrella Gualtiere Palumbo.
He was a graduate of Steubenville Big Red High School.
Big Mike soldiered in the United States Army during World War II where he served in the Pacific as a paratrooper.
On June 18, 1949, Big Mike danced with his bride, Helen L Crossetti from Wellsburg W.Va. ... and how they could dance!
Michael was a proud member of the Steubenville Police Department and retired as sergeant in 1979.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Mike also was a member of the Theta Chi Alpha Fraternity and a life long member of St Anthony/Triumph of the Cross Catholic Church.
He is survived by his three daughters, Michele (Tony) Lonetta of Steubenville, Janice Gualtiere of Fort Lauderdale, and Marianne (David) Tichon of Fairhaven, Mass.
He leaves five grandchildren, Christopher and Toni Jean Lonetta, Dylan, Dina and Jake Tichon; and one great-granddaughter, Juliana Lonetta. Surviving him too is his sister, Marie (John) Quattrone, of Steubenville.
Also 'family' to Big Mike were the boys at the Spot Bar. As mobility became challenging, they were his motivation to get out of the house.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his wife, Helen. They shared 60 wonderful years together.
Big Mike was quite the entertainer, often belting out "New York" with the performers at The Spot. Tonight, Big Mike, have a drink with Frank and Dino and tell the bartender that Tito and Mickey are buying. Salute us all, and as you're spinning Helen around on the dance floor, give her an extra big hug.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, per Mike's request there will be no visitation or services. Che Riposi in Peace Big Mike. Offer condolences, www.mostifuneralhome.com.
