WELLSBURG - Land line telephone service for the Brooke County Sheriff's Department, including its non-emergency numbers, as well as a few other offices at the county courthouse and many Wellsburg residents was restored Thursday afternoon.
Brooke County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Heck, who oversees the county's emergency 911 center under the direction of Sheriff Richard Ferguson, said Frontier Communications has restored service to the sheriff's department and the offices of the county clerk, circuit court clerk and county assessor.
Dan Page, spokesman for Frontier, said service was restored to less than 100 Wellsburg area customers Wednesday morning and others were expected to receive service within 24 hours.
Heck said dispatchers that had been working at the Franklin Fire Department have returned to the center, which is at the courthouse.
A temporary call center was established at the fire station Wednesday after crews with Mon Power accidentally cut an underground telephone cable near the intersection of state Routes 27 and 2 while replacing a utility pole.
Non-emergency calls to the sheriff's department were routed through a cellular phone, and 911 calls were received and forwarded by the Hancock and Jefferson county emergency 911 centers until Thursday morning, when service was restored to Brooke County's 911 center.
