WELLSBURG - Brooke County residents may have their pets vaccinated for rabies at the Brooke County Animal Clinic, which will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates:
June 4 at the Beech Bottom Fire Department.
June 5 at the Hooverson Heights Fire Department.
June 6 at the McKinleyville Fire Department.
June 7 at the Colliers Fire Department.
June 8 at the E.R. Nichols First Ward Park in Wellsburg.
The cost is $8 per vaccine for dogs or cats and $15 each for distemper shots. Dog licenses, which are required by the county, also may be obtained for $3 each.
Memorial Day service set
FOLLANSBEE - Follansbee American Legion Post 45 will hold Memorial Day services at noon Monday outside the post home at 998 Main St., following a short parade on state Route 2 at 11 a.m. Coffee and doughnuts will be offered at the post from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and lunch will be served there following the service.
WELLSBURG - Auditions for Brooke Hills Playhouse's production of "The Mousetrap" and "Leading Ladies" will be held June 2 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the playhouse. No preparation is necessary.
Actors will be required to read excerpts from the scripts. Anyone unable to audition on June 2 should contact the playhouse at (304) 737-3344 by Friday to make other arrangements.
WELLSBURG - Fred Saluga, state director of the West Virginia Mutual UFO Network, will speak at 11 a.m. June 2 at the Brooke County Public Library.
Saluga began investigating unidentified flying objects in the 1970s while employed as a law enforcement officer.
He has investigated UFO sightings, abduction cases, and other UFO- related activities and UFO phenomena in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and West Virginia.
Community Days dinner set
FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Community Days Kick-Off Dinner will be held July 11 at St. Francis Centre, 508 Lee Rd.
The guest speaker will be Oliver Luck, West Virginia University athletic director. Appetizers will be served at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at the Follansbee City Building or by contacting a Community Days committee member.
Sale to benefit Salvation Army
WELLSBURG - Riebeck's Food Market stores will be sharing 10 percent of their doughnut sales each Friday in June with the Brooke County Salvation Army in observance of National Doughnut Day and as a nod to the Salvation Army's role in popularizing the treat many years ago.
The Brooke County Salvation Army also is taking orders for Riesbeck's cake doughnuts that may be picked up at its service center at 401 Commerce St. (state Route 2) on June 1 only.

National Doughnut Day originated with the Salvation Army, having been created in 1938 in Chicago to honor the Salvation Army "doughnut lassies" of World War I.
The women, also known as "doughnut girls," were Salvation Army volunteers who made and delivered the treats to soldiers serving in France during the war in an effort to fill their stomachs and boost their spirits. Riesbeck Food stores are located in Follansbee and Wintersville.
Oil Can Derby
WELLSBURG - Organizers of the Wellsburg 4th of July Oil Can Derby seek boys and girls, ages 8-15, to participate in the race, which will return at 1 p.m. July 4 on Fourth Street. There will be two divisions: stock, for a car and driver together weighing 210 pounds and super stock, for a car and driver weighing 225 pounds.
Trophies for first, second, third and fourth place will be awarded in each division. There also will be trophies for best appearance. Entry forms may be obtained at Al's Auto Service at 421 Commerce St. (state Route 2) and must be returned by June 21.
Fred Marino, the business' owner and coordinator of the derby, can provide information about ordering cars or kits to build the cars. Marino said kits for new cars cost about $500 and aren't difficult to assemble. Used cars also can be found online for less.

Library to observe Memorial Day
WELLSBURG - A Memorial Day program will be held at 11 a.m. today by the Wellsburg Elks Lodge and Brooke County Library in the library's River Room.
Patriotic poetry will be read, and refreshments will be served following the short program.
The library and its Follansbee branch will be closed Monday.
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library Board will meet at noon Wednesday in the library's Elmer Vincent meeting room.
Church sells food, holds yard sale
COLLIERS - Olde St. John's Episcopal Church at the intersection of Eldersville and St. John's roads will be selling strawberry shortcakes and other food and yard sale items during the St. John's Road community yard sale June 2.
The fundraiser, which also will include taco in a bag and hot dogs, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There will be a variety of household items, books and new ball caps for sale.
