TORONTO - The city fire department's new utility truck was discussed during Tuesday's City Council meeting.
The department recently acquired the 2012 Chevy Silverado from TEAM Automotive, according to Mayor John Geddis.
"The (fire department) also got a new fire (utility) truck," said the mayor, adding the truck was purchased with funds from the from the city's new equipment fund. "It will be a multi-purpose vehicle."
Geddis said the dealership beat the state cooperative for purchasing new vehicles, and the four-door, six-passenger truck cost $24,715. He added the truck also would replace the fire chief's current vehicle, which Geddis said was "falling apart." The four-wheel drive vehicle also has a towing hitch and will be used to haul the department's rescue boats as well as other miscellaneous equipment, said Geddis.
"We passed the (final) legislation honoring those (retired volunteer) firefighters," said the mayor.
Those firefighters included Mike Balogic with 36 years on the department; Jim Brown, 32 years of service; Keith Gooch, 29 years; Randy Henry, 29 years; Dale Martin, 21 years; and Kevin Gillis, 21 years.
Council also voted to consider legislation to establish a city building department during Tuesday's meeting, according to Geddis.
"The (city municipal pool) in its first three days of operation brought in more than $13,000," Geddis said, adding Memorial Day weekend is one of the pool's busiest times of year.
