WELLSBURG - Members of Brooke High School's Class of 2012 and its top students have been announced.
The class' valedictorian is Vincenzo "Vinny" Pizzuti, and its salutatorian is Kathleen "Katie" O'Connell.
Seniors who earned a 4.0 grade-point average or better are Joshua Harrick, Alec Salakovich, Caitlin Luck, Brian Gialluco, Emily Sloat, Maxwell Allemond, Nathan Harper, Vanessa Michetti and Halle Virgin.
Pizzuti is the son of John and Dorothy Pizzuti of Follansbee and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. His honors include National Merit Scholarship Commended Student, Elks Teen of the Year, Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, Mountaineer Boys State, OVAC All-Conference Academic Team, National Society of High School Scholars, National Honor Society and being named outstanding student in many honors, advance placement and career technical courses.
He was a four-year-letterer in cross country and track, two-year letterer in varsity basketball and co-captain in all three sports and was twice named Brooke Cross Country's Most Valuable Male Runner and was presented the I Am Third Award by fellow athletes in three years. He was a student council member for three years, president of the chemistry club, vice president of the Spanish club, secretary of Interact, captain of the academic team and member of the math club, Future Business Leaders of America, Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston Catholic Diocese youth board and other groups.
He plans to attend Notre Dame University and study chemical and biomolecular engineering.
O'Connell is the daughter of Michael and Melissa O'Connell of Wellsburg. She was in the honors program, secretary of the National Honor Society and a three-year letterer in volleyball and four-year letterer in softball. She was active in the theater, appearing in "Almost, Maine;" and a member of the art, drama, guitar, chemistry and math clubs and Bruin Leadership Team.
She has volunteered at the Brooke County Animal Shelter. She plans to attend West Virginia University and study engineering.
Harrick is the son of Joseph and Wendy Harrick of Follansbee. He was on the swim team for three years, helping the team to earn three OVAC and regional championships and winning regional championships in three individual competitions; a three-year letterer in soccer and one-year letterer in tennis and track.
His athletic honors include All-Regional Team two years, Most Valuable Player two years, qualifying for the state swim meet all three years, holding the school's record for four events and as a team member, setting records in three events; and in soccer, All-Conference OVAC First Team and Two Rivers Athletic Conference First Team.
He earned the bronze, silver and gold Academic Achievement pins, lettered on the academic team, was named to the National Honors Society, was Key Club vice president and a member of the Bruin Leadership Team, Future Business Leaders of America, Interact and the chemistry and math clubs.
Other honors include Boys State, Governor's Honors Academy and Wendy's Heisman state finalist.
He plans to attend WVU and study petroleum engineering.
Salakovich is the son of Alexis Russell and James Salakovich, both of Follansbee. He was vice president of the Key Club and a member of the academic team and chemistry and math clubs and participated in Math Field Day in seven of the last eight years, placing eight at the county level this year.
He was a four-year member of the swim team and freshman football team.
He works at The Rose by Clara's Catering and plans to study petroleum and natural gas engineering at West Virginia University.
Luck is the daughter of Jeff and Jae Luck of Wellsburg. She is formerly of Hays, Kan., where she was involved in band, choir, golf, drama club and the spring play during her freshman year.
While at Brooke, she was in the jazz, concert and marching bands and concert and madrigal choirs and performed in the school's spring musicals, including this year's, in which she was the leading lady. She was named to the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, WVU Honor Band, Region I Honor Band, OVAC All-Star Band, American Choral Directors Association Chamber Choir and All-State Choir and received the Buzz Rocchio Award for music excellence.
She plans to attend Slippery Rock University and major in vocal music performance.
Gialluco is the son of Donna Gialluco and Gregg Gialluco, both of Weirton, and a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. His honors include the Roger Simpson Award for outstanding student-athlete, National Honor Society, Principal's honor roll every semester, bronze, silver and gold Academic Achievement Pins, Elks Teen of the Month and Science Department Student of the Month.
He was on the basketball team four years, lettering two years and serving as captain this year; a four-year letterer and captain for the soccer team and four-year letter in tennis, for which he was a region runnerup and quarterfinalist at the state tennis tournament.
His athletic honors include being voted Co-Most Valuable Player and MVP by teammates, being named to the 2011 All-OVAC First team, All-Two Rivers Athletic Conference First Team and All-State Honorable Mention; and being selected for the West Virginia All-State Game and OVAC All-Star Game.
He was senior class president, captain of the academic team, president of the math club and a member of the history, chemistry and Key clubs and yearbook staff.
He plans to attend WVU and study mechanical engineering.
Sloat is the daughter of Judi and Ken Tomes of Follansbee. She was in the honors program and completed many honors and advanced placement courses.
She was a member of the Future Educators of America and placed third in a state essay competition held by the group, the National Youth Leadership Initiative, which discourages illegal drug use; and the swim team, qualifying for the state swim meet.
When not involved with school or work as a cashier, she has volunteered, through her church, in the Awana outreach program for children.
She plans to study elementary education and teach in various parts of the world.
Allemond is the son of Cathy Cipriani of Wellsburg and John Allemond of Wellsburg and a member of Wellsburg First Presbyterian Church. He was in the honors program and National Honor Society and selected for Camp Horseshoe and Rotary Youth Leadership Camp.
He was in the Brooke High Band drumline for three years, concert and jazz bands, math club and spring musical stage crew.
He plans to attend WVU and study geology.
Harper is the son of Greg and Tammy West-Harper of Follansbee. His honors include Principal's Honor Roll for eight semesters, three years of perfect attendance, National Honor Society president, bronze, silver and gold Academic Achievement pins; Herald-Star Academic All-Star Award, OVAC All-Conference Academic Award, being named outstanding student in several career technical courses and being selected for the Brooke-Hancock Leadership Council and National Student Leadership Conference.
He was on the football team four years, lettering three of them; the baseball team, Wellsburg and Follansbee city leagues and two travel ball teams. He was a member of Future Business Leaders of America and Interact.
He plans to attend West Liberty University and study accounting.
Michetti is the daughter of David and Deborah Michetti of Follansbee and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Follansbee. She has completed various honors, advance placement and college courses, was in the honors program and received bronze, silver, and gold Academic Achievement pins. She was a member of Health Occupation Students of America, Spanish club and Order of the Phoenix and treasurer of the drama club.
She starred in the school's production of "Almost, Maine"; and volunteered at Weirton Medical Center's public relations department.
The recipient of several scholarships, she plans to attend Duquesne University and study corporate communications.
Virgin is the daughter of Jerry Virgin and Susan and Joe Mullenbach of Wellsburg. She was in the honors program and completed many honors and advanced placement classes, was named to the National Honor Society and selected for the West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts and Camp Horseshoe Leadership Summit.
She is a two-year letterer of the dance team and was an officer of the art club and member of the ski, chemistry and French clubs.
She plans to attend WVU and study architectural and electrical engineering.
