John Cazin Jr.

CAZIN, John Jr., 82, died Monday, May 14, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

The family will greet friends at a memorial reception from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 18 at The Kirkwood Room in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or to the New Horizons Band c/o Box 167, Iowa City, Iowa 52244.

John was born July 2, 1929, in Warwood, W.Va., the son of John and Mary (Hascak) Cazin Sr.

He was raised in Beech Bottom, W.Va., and graduated from Wellsburg High School in Wellsburg, W.Va. Following high school he joined the Marines. Upon entering the Navy Midshipman Officer Training Program he attended the University of North Carolina, where he received his undergraduate degree, his masters and PhD in microbiology.

On Sept. 26, 1953, John married Mary Lois Bowers in Steubenville, Ohio. In 1957, they moved to Iowa City where John was a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Iowa until his retirement in 1997.

John had served on the Iowa City School Board where he was a past president. He was a member of the New Horizons Band. John enjoyed woodworking, golf, playing his saxophone and motorcycling.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lois and their three children, Jonathan Cazin of Orlando, Fla., Jeannette (Greg) Hall of Iowa City and Patrick (Dawn) Cazin of Burlington; three grandchildren, Lauren and Lindsay Hall and Ryan Cazin; his siblings, Patricia Yandrich of Colliers, W.Va., Carole Jellots (Don Lemasters) of Follansbee, W.Va., Ken (Maryann) Cazin of Las Vegas; sister-in-law Julie Cazin of Raleigh N.C.

John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Robert.
