Shirley Cullifer

CULLIFER, Shirley J., 76, of Chester, passed away, in the comfort of her home with her loving family by her side, on Friday May 11, 2012, following a lengthy illness.

Shirley was born on Dec. 15, 1935, in Industry, Pa.

She was a daughter of the late William T. and Jennie Forrest Verzella.

Shirley worked as a secretary at Mackintosh-Hemphill Steel in Midland where she met her future husband, Eugene "Whimp" Cullifer whom she married on Nov. 22, 1956, and who survives at home.

Later, she had worked as a retail sales manager for Home Interiors.

More recently, she and her husband were the owners and operators of the Foliage House Greenhouse and Florist in Hookstown.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester where she was very active in the Ladies Guild, and she was a graduate of the Mt. Galizin Catholic High School in Baden, Pa.

Shirley enjoyed all of her friends in the neighborhood card club and her weekly bingo games, but by far, her most cherished memories was spending time with her grandsons.

Preceding her in death was one brother, William Verzella Jr.

Other survivors include her two daughters, Karen Mansker of Kiel, Wis.; and Cindy Lloyd of Chester; three grandsons, Travis and Damien Mansker and Christopher Lloyd. In addition she leaves one sister, Dorothy (Hugh) Rich of Media, Pa.; and two aunts, Ann LaGreco of Canonsburg, Pa., and Agnes Cordier of California; an uncle, Dominic Verzella of Hookstown, and a sister-in-law, Roberta Verzella of California.

Rev. Father Eric Antwi will preside for a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester. Entombment will follow at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell, W.Va.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester on Monday from 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

A liturgy of the word service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. with Father Eric presiding.
