To the editor:
Does anyone else see that what used to be the middle class is now becoming the permanent under class? The really amazing part to me is that we're doing it to ourselves by buying into the twisted rhetoric of the Mitt Romney-supporting spin machine.
Do you really believe that you can live on a $12-an-hour job, and buy a home, pay property taxes, pay homeowner's insurance or health insurance, raise a family, make car payments and have enough to feed your family? Oh, by the way, don't forget to put money aside for your retirement and your childrens' education.
In a recent article in this newspaper, it was reported that even baboons can recognize true words from gibberish. Why is it so difficult for educated people to do the same? Even those who belong to the same party as Romney don't believe that he's conservative enough to garner their support.
What does "conservative enough" actually mean? Take your pick of meanings such as hard-line, extreme or cold hearted. Keep in mind that those who support a "conservative enough" position are not the majority of the Republican Party, they are the fringe element. Those are the same people who would like to destroy Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the food stamp program, women's rights, Planned Parenthood and anything to do with the EPA.
Remember how investment banks bundled mortgage loans as prime Wall Street investments and sold them to everyone who had money? Remember, then, when it fell apart, went bankrupt and took the entire economy to the verge of depression? Are these the people you want running the economy?
Remember when House Speaker John Boehner pleaded with voters to give them another chance to rebuild the economy and create jobs in 2008? Well, how's that worked out for you in the last four years? Seen any improvements? Yet the stagnant economy and high unemployment is still being blamed on the president, and House Republicans vote "no" on every job bill that's proposed.
Do they really care about the best interests of working people, or do they just want to see the president defeated in November so they can sell the country to Wall Street and foreign investors? Look at what's in store for you and your family if this group of radical people gets control of your future.
We can't continue to be distracted by things like contraception, the president's birth certificate or fruitcakes like Donald Trump or some demented rock star.
We must concentrate our attention on important issues that will affect our future ability to live a decent life and not worry about losing everything we've worked for our entire lives. Think about what those words they're using actually mean to you.
It's like Bush 2.0 - what could go wrong?
