Ohio tennis sectionals begin

DOVER - Sectional tennis took place at Dover Monday with athletes from Steubenville Big Red and Indian Creek high schools participating.

In singles, Fabio Mattina had a strong showing for the Redskins, making to the quarterfinals before losing. Mattina topped Zach Immel of Dover in the first round, 6-2 and 6-1, and then beat Bryce Bonnette of St. Clairsville, 6-3 and 7-6(4). He fell to Hiland's Braxton Mullett by a pair of 6-3 scores.

Mattina's teammate Shane Winland won his opening round match against St. Clairsville's Izaac Wiley 6-0 and 6-3 before falling to P.J. Bair of Coshocton 6-1 and 6-0.

Indian Creek's Jared Conn along with Aaron Bottegal, Mike Nodianos and Harold Malone of Big Red all participated and fell in the first round.

In doubles, Big Red's team of Mike Petrides and Brandon Llewllyn made a run to the quarterfinals. After an opening round bye, they topped Dover's McCutcheon and Conrad 6-4, 4-6, and 6-2 before falling to the Engstrom twins from Cambridge by a pair of 6-0 scores.

Big Red's Tyler Casto and Hannah Meyer, as well as Indian Creek's Brandon Hammack and Justin Caniff, advanced to the second round. Meyer and Casto topped DeNoble and Trouten of St. Clairsville 7-6(2) and 6-3 before losing to the Magness twins of Coshocton by two 6-0 scores. Caniff and Hammack had a first-round bye before losing to Caswell and Morales of Dover 7-6(2) and 6-2.

Caleb Smith and Josh Shield competed for the Redskins as well, dropping their first round match.

Edison tops Central

RICHMOND - The Edison baseball team defeated Steubenville Central 7-5 Monday at Jefferson State Lake in regular-season action.

Mark Smyth picked up two doubles, a single and two RBIs for the Wildcats, with Nolan Marcus picking up a single, double and an RBI. Josh Pasek added two singles, Greg Stagani a double and an RBI, Alec Jones a single and an RBI and Koby Sronce a single and two RBIs.

For the Crusaders, Steve Mihalyo had a single and two RBIs, Brenton Colabella a double and an RBI and Brannt Pieniazek two singles.

Both teams continue sectional play this week with Central (19-6) taking on Shadyside Wednesday at Bridgeport and Edison (23-3) playing Buckeye Local Thursday at Vaccaro Field.

Aftanas records an ace

WHEELING - Curt Aftanas netted a hole-in-one at the Speidel Golf Course at Oglebay Park.

The Carnegie, Pa., resident used a driver on the 264-yard 13th hole.

The witnesses were Ray Neverly and Bryan Vranek.
