Nogay earns honors

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington and Jefferson College sophomore baseball player Eddie Nogay was selected to the Capital One/CoSIDA NCAA Division III Academic All-District First Team.

Nogay and teammate Josh Staniscia are two of 12 players named to the District 4 team, which is made up of all NCAA Division III baseball programs in Pennsylvania. The pair are now automatically nominated for Academic All-America honors along with all other first-team selections from the additional seven regions around the country.

Nogay earned a 3.5 GPA as an English major. He owns a 5-0 record and 1.95 earned run average in 11 appearances (seven starts) on the mound this spring. Nogay has allowed just 11 earned runs in 50 innings, while striking out 31 and leads the team with three saves.

No. 18 W&J (30-6, 18-3) has clinched first place in the PAC standings heading into its final league series of the spring against Thomas More, which begins at 1 p.m. today at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents will be the hosts for next week's conference tournament.

SUA looking for umpires

STEUBENVILLE - An increase in demand means the Steubenville Umpires Association is looking for men and women who are interested in becoming umpires for the spring and summer baseball and softball seasons.

The association, one of the oldest officials' organizations in the state of Ohio, services baseball and fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball leagues from Avella to Jewett, and from Newell to Wellsburg.

Prospective umpires must be 16 or older.

Weir soccer boosters to meet

WEIRTON - The Weir High School Soccer Boosters will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the high school cafeteria.

Spartans start 10-2-3

WINTERSVILLE - The five JK United Spartans Select soccer teams opened the season with a combined 10-2-3.

The U10 boys Division 4 team started 2-1-1. Earning points for the Spartans were Gunnar Brettell, Noah Reinacher, David McDaniel, Lauren Ferralli, Tom Beigel, Olivia Chanoski, Jack Rook, Michael Rook, Ethan Moore, Josh Kinyo and Vince Carapellotti. Jacob Clevanger and Travis Shore were in goal.

The U10 boys Division 6 team went 2-0-1. Earning points were Matthew Duff, David Ferroni, Libby Saccocia, Joseph Rohde, Anastasia Crisante, Cole McCullough, McKenna Carter. Brandon Hiles, McCullough and Ferroni were in goal.

The U12 girls team also opened 2-0-1. Earning points were Sydney Gates, Sydney Starr, Allie Zapolnik, Jara Madzia and Philumena Miravalle. Theresa Duff, Emma Crites and Ekaterina Scaffidi were in goal.

The U12 boys have opened the season 3-0. Earning points were T.J. Brown, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, Mikey Irvin, Ryan Kinyo, Carlin Long, Jacob Noble, Brennon Norris, Ian Phillips, Justice Slappy and Joseph Venditti. Kaleb Fenske and Phillips were in goal.

The U14 boys team went 1-1. Earning points were Connor Pecar, Michael Wendt, Parker Dalton, Brandon DeLaratta, J.D. Pritchard and Brien Beattiel. Mason Pasiuk and Beattie were in goal.
