SPEER, William Elmer, 83, of Chester, W.Va., passed away Thursday, May 3, 2012.
Born Jan. 6, 1929, in Langeloth, Pa., he was the son of the late Fredrick and Bertha (Miller) Speer.
He served in the Navy, during the Korean War. He was a retired tow boat pilot for Weirton Steel; a former troop master for Boy Scouts Troop 496 and a former founder of the Little League in Florence, Pa.
William was also preceded in death by three sons, William Paul, William Elmer and Kenneth Speer; a sister, Hilda Speer and five brothers, Ernie, Frank, Ross, Fred, and Harold Speer.
Surviving are five sons, John and Stephen (Debbie) Speer all of Weirton, Wayne Speer of South Carolina, Patrick Speer of Chester, and also by his oldest son, whose name is unknown; two daughters, Marjorie (Denver) Jones of Weirton and Bertha (Bennie) Lamp of Chester; ten grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and a sister, Esther Boggs of New Castle, Pa.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2012. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.
