When the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, the city of Steubenville and area businesses announced plans for last summer's first Stars and Stripes Festival and Concert, there were some area residents who were were not quite sure what to make of the event.
Those concerns were unfounded, and residents from around the Tri-State Area were able to enjoy a day of activities in and around the Hollywood City Center area and the Harding practice facility, take in a country music concert at Harding Stadium and experience the city's annual Independence Day fireworks extravaganza.
Organizers are planning to build on that success when the second Stars and Stripes event is held July 1.
Presented by the chamber and WTOV-TV, this year's event will once again bring a day of activities to Steubenville's Mid-City. Activities planned after noon's opening ceremonies will include a classic car show and family fun zone.
The lineup of food and nonfood vendors has been increased, officials explained when announcing this year's event during a press conference held Wednesday. And, adults will notice that expanded food offerings will be available at the beer tent.
This year's concert performances figure to draw residents from all points of the Tri-State Area - and beyond. Local favorite Joe Zelek, a Mount Pleasant native, will take the stage in Harding Stadium at 7 p.m., with the Clarks, a regional favorite whose music is quickly being discovered by the rest of the nation, scheduled to follow at 8:15 p.m. Tickets for the concert will go on sale Friday.
The evening will conclude at 9:45 p.m. with the city's annual fireworks display, which will be staged from the hillside overlooking Hollywood City Center.
An event of this scope could not be presented without the efforts of many local organizations and businesses. Major sponsors include the city, Chesapeake Energy, Hollywood City Center, Steubenville City Schools and TEAM Automotive. Also helping to sponsor the event are Choice Brands of Ohio, the Fort Steuben Mall, the Herald-Star, Iron City Distributing, Kwik King Food Stores and New York Life.
The July 1 event will be the start of Steubenville's Independence Day celebration. Officials said the city's traditional lunch for senior citizens and veterans at the JFK Center and day of free swimming at Belleview Park will be held on July 4.
The 2012 edition of the Stars and Stripes Festival and Concert is just another example of what can be accomplished when groups from all parts of our community work together. We're excited about this year's festival, and we hope you will make plans to participate in the event.
