OVAC Class 3A, 5A off to finals

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The 3A and 5A schools can officially make their reservations for Saturday's championship run at the Cal Giffin Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships.

Qualifying wrapped up under ideal weather conditions Wednesday at Red Devil Stadium for those two divisions.

The championship meet begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with field events and noon for running events.

The final spots in the championship meet will be earned tonight when the 2A and 4A schools resume their meet at 4 p.m. for field events and 5 p.m. for running back at Red Devil Stadium.

The Martins Ferry Lady Riders did nothing to hurt their hopes of giving a solid chase to the conference title on Saturday.

After the second day of qualifying, the Lady Riders had six of the top qualifiers in the nine events contested.

Sophomore ace Sarah Applegarth leads the long jump with a mark of 16-3. Junior Sunshine Wrenn paced the 800 qualifying with a 2:29.99.

Freshman Jamie Truchan was the top 1600M qualifier in the 3A class in 5:41.97.

The Lady Riders also paced all three relays that were held. The Purple's crack 4x400 team of Applegarth, Wrenn, Taylor Jenkins and Truchan ran a 4:16.89.

The Ferry shuttle team, which has the top time in all of the OVAC this season, posted a 1:09.14. The team is comprised of Courtney Crolley, Rikki Allen, Ashley Griffith and Nikki Allen.

The 400 relay team of Ashlei Ray, Crolley, Griffith and Kayce Neeley posted a 52.94, which was tops in 3A.

Bellaire's Myleah Green, who paced the shot put qualifying on Monday, was tops in the discus with a twirl of 96-7.

Bridgeport frosh Brianna Massey leads the 200 meter at 27.73.

On the boys' side, Barnesville had a strong meet of qualifying, pacing two events.

Junior Brandon Stephens ran 2:06.0 in the 800 and joined forces with Jeff Hart, Kyle McIntire and Jacob Anderson for a 3:37.02 in the 4x400.

Martins Ferry also had a pair of top qualifiers. Junior strongman Sean McGee paced the shot put with an impressive heave of 55-2. The Riders' strong shuttle team of Richie Padyjasek, Brian Styles, Travis Jenkins and Jack Fitch skimmed 40 hurdles in 1:01.51.

Magnolia, which figures to make a strong push for a repeat title, was led by junior speedster Stephen Rogalski's 23.11 in the 200, which led the field.

Bellaire's strong 4x100 team of Josh Davis, Nick Maffe, Collin Kimbro and the top 100 meter dasher in 3A Juwaun Whetstone, the Big Reds led the qualifying with a time of 45.38.

Bridgeport's Cody Frey produced the top time in the 300 hurdles at 39.83.

Buckeye Trail's Austin Carleton was the top high jumper at 6-2 and Trever Pontius was the top 1600 meter runner at 4:43.84.

The battle between Two Rivers Athletic Conference members, Morgantown, University and Wheeling Park is set to go for Saturday in Class 5A.

All three schools had another solid day of qualifying.

Wheeling Park produced the top time of the day in the 4x400. Ashley Grove, RaKedra Webb, Lauren Tarovisky and Natasha Whitaker posted a 4:09.83.

Alexis Ricker punched her ticket to the discus final by virtue of a twirl of 99-1.

Brooke's Ali Crawford is primed for a busy afternoon on Saturday. She was the top qualifier in the 300 hurdles at 47.38.

Brooke's Rachel Richard was the top long jumper in the field with a mark of 16-4.

On the boys side, the same schools and throw in Cambridge should duke it out for 18 events on Saturday.

The Patriots' Michael Mauck was the top qualifier in the 800 meter run, circling the track twice in 2:04.75.

DeWanya Neal added the top spot in the shot put to the discus mark he accomplished on Monday. Neal's put of 49-ft-4 3/4 was tops in the big-school class.

D.C. Banks had the top 300 hurdle mark in 5A, cruising over eight hurdles in 41.71.

The Patriots' shuttle team of Banks, Chase Bonar, Cole Bertol and Austin Farley posted a 60.68 to set the standard in the hurdle relay.

Cambridge's Deshaun Lewis was the top half-lap dasher in the field. He ran the 200 in 23.20.
