STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Community Action Council is now accepting applications for the Curtis A. Brooks Memorial Scholarship.
According to Barb West, chief executive officer of CAC, "Curtis Brooks was a visionary leader in the Community Action movement both in Ohio and nationally. He was a pioneer in the war on poverty and the anti-poverty movement.
"The purpose of the scholarship is to honor him by finding a person who hopes to pursue a career that will have a positive effect on those who need assistance. The award will be for $1,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year," said West.
She added the recipient will be someone who is pursuing a degree in social work, social service, child development, political science, public administration or a related field.
"The applicants must have an income no greater than 80 percent of the median income for the Columbus Metropolitan area. A family of four with income not exceeding $54,900 would qualify. Incomes vary according to family size. The applicants must also be 55 years old or younger, pursuing a first, second or third career and will attend an accredited institution in the U.S.," noted West.
Interested persons may contact the Community Action Council's Administration Office at (740) 282-0971, extension 110, for information or to request an application.
