WELLSBURG - Nominations are being accepted for two special honors involving Brooke County schools.
The Brooke High School Academic Hall of Fame is a new honor established to recognize graduates of the high school who have distinguished themselves academically or professional following graduation.
Principal Toni Shute said the school has had an athletic hall of fame for many years and was overdue for one that recognized alumni who have excelled in their chosen field of study or career.
"There are Brooke grads who have gone on to do some great things," said Shute, who will head up the volunteer committee that considers the nominations.
Nominees must have been out of school for at least 10 years.
Nominations should include an explanation of why a person has been nominated and be submitted no later than May 31 to: Toni A. Shute, Brooke High School, RR 3 Cross Creek Road, Wellsburg, WV 26070 or at email@example.com.
For information, call (304) 527-1410, extension 3542.
Shute said the inductees will be recognized at a dinner to be held before the school's academic achievement program in April 2013.
She said it seemed a fitting occasion because current Brooke High School students are recognized then for outstanding academic performance and attendance through the presentation of bronze, silver or gold pins, depending on their grade level.
Nominations also are being accepted for the Brooke County Schools Wall of Fame. In its 10th year, the wall of fame recognizes past school employees for distinguished service to the school district.
Inductees may include principals, teachers, guidance counselors, school bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other service personnel and other school employees who have made a difference in students' lives.
Nominees must have been employed by the school district for at least 20 years, and they may be living or dead. Anyone may make a nomination, and past nominations who weren't selected may be re-submitted.
Nomination forms are available at the board's office at 1201 Pleasant Ave., all Brooke County schools, the school district's bus garage and the Brooke County, Follansbee and Mary H. Weir libraries. They should be submitted by May 11.
The new inductees will be recognized at a Brooke County Board of Education meeting, and their names will be added to the Wall of Fame plaque at the board's office.
