DiBacco throws a 1-hitter
LISBON - The Weir softball team played 17 games this season without shutting out an opponent. Now the Lady Red Riders have thrown two shutouts in a row.
Junior pitcher Micah DiBacco threw a one-hitter Saturday as Weir defeated Beaver Local 10-0 in five innings for its second straight win following nine straight losses.
DiBacco struck out three batters. The one hit she allowed was solid liner into the left-center gap with one out in the third inning.
For the second straight game, Weir scored all the runs it would need in the top of the first inning. Meikka Buffo started the game with a bunt single and stole second base. After Haley McLaughlin reached on an infield single to move Buffo to third, Caitlyn Fodor grounded out to second to score Buffo and give Weir a 1-0 lead. McLaughlin later scored on a wild pitch to put the Lady Riders out in front 2-0.
The Lady Riders (7-13) struck for five runs after two outs in the second inning and Buffo was a key player again, hitting a two-run inside-the-park home run to put Weir up 4-0. Later in the inning, Danica Rasicci delivered two runs with a single to center then scored on a double by Taylor Gianangeli as the Lady Riders took a 7-0 lead to the bottom of the second.
Weir is slated to return to action on Wednesday, hosting Oak Glen (8-18) in the first two games of a best-of-three sectional tournament series.
