STEUBENVILLE - Steubenville Big Red baseball coach Fred Heatherington has been looking for his team to be consistent day in and day out and it has been the last two days.

"We just have to get some consistency and hopefully we're getting it," he said after Wednesday's 5-0 win over John Marshall at Vaccaro Field. "We've played well the last two games and we're playing well at the right time, going into the tournament. We have the drawing Sunday, and hopefully we can keep it going."

Big Red followed Tuesday's 9-5 win over St. Clairsville in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 4A semifinals with a solid, three-phase win over the Monarchs, who visit Cambridge today in the Class 5A semifinal.

"We had good pitching today," Heatherington said of starter and winner Justin Corsi. "He threw 82 pitches. He got ahead in the count today. Last time out he got behind and struggled. Today he was on and our defense was on their toes making plays."

Big Red scored in the first when Lucky McClurg reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch and scored on JoJo Pierro's groundout.

The hosts added two in the second. Michael Camilletti walked, reached second on a passed ball and scored on Ryan Vojvodich's single. Matt Petrella singled and he and Vojvodich moved 90 feet on a balk and Vojvodich scored on John Linn's single.

Big Red added one in the fifth when, with one out, Pizzoferrato, Camilletti and Vojvodich singled, the final one plating Pizzoferrato.

Steubenville, which takes on Catholic Central today, added the final run in the sixth. Linn walked and Glenn Perdue came in to pinch run. He stole second and scored on Bryan Pierro's single.

"We put the ball in play," said Heatherington. "We didn't hit it as hard as last night, but we put the ball in play and scored runs when we had to.

"We got some timely hits."

Corsi went the distance for the winners. He struck out four and walked two.

John Marshall coach Bob Montgomery declined to comment.
