STEUBENVILLE - The local area could have a new millionaire.
While the attention last Friday was geared towards the record-breaking $640 million Mega Millions jackpot, the Speedway located at 4450 Sunset Blvd. on Wednesday sold a Powerball ticket to one lucky customer worth $1 million.
The winner has not released their name at this time, according to The Ohio Lottery Commission.
LUCKY — A Powerball ticket sold at the Speedway located at 4450 Sunset Blvd. in Steubenville on Wednesday was worth $1 million to the person now holding it. Lottery officials confirmed the win Thursday but the lucky winner has not yet released their name. No jackpot winners were announced for Wednesday’s drawing, but the anonymous ticket holder was one of five that hit for $1 million across the nation and the next drawing will be tonight with a jackpot of $80 million.
Even though the anonymous ticket holder didn't win the jackpot, which requires matching all five numbers plus the Powerball, the ticket was confirmed as a winner by a lottery official during a visit Thursday to the Speedway, said Gabrielle King, store manager.
"As far as I know there has never been another big winning ticket sold at our store. It's very exciting, though, and we're eager to find out whether it was a regular customer that purchased it or if it was just someone stopping through on a whim," said King.
The odds of matching five numbers are 1 in 5,153,632.
"People have overheard us talking about it and once the word gets out they will probably believe there is a higher chance of winning here," said King.
Steubenville resident Tina Fritch said she was glad to hear that it could have been someone local that won the money.
"We could all use the money. I've never hit for anything before, but this gives me a little hope," said Fritch.
No jackpot winners were announced for Wednesday's drawing, but the anonymous ticket holder was one of five that hit for $1 million across the nation and the next drawing will be tonight with a jackpot of $80 million.
The odds of hitting that jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.
"I was shocked when I found out a winner was so close to here," said King.
"I may be more inclined to buy some Powerball tickets now," said Fritch.
