WINTERSVILLE - When Anthony Mougianis decided to put his Ohio State University memorabilia up for auction to benefit the United Way of Jefferson County, he said the bottom line is that it's helping people.
Mougianis, owner of Apollo Professional Cleaning in Wintersville and United Way 2013 campaign chairman, will be the sponsor, host and event chairman for the Ohio State University Auction to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 31 at Apollo Professional Cleaning located at 1626 Cadiz Road.
"I think the big thing is that I've accumulated this merchandise since I was a teenager. I've enjoyed it for 40 years and now others can do the same, and at the same time it'll help others in need through the United Way," said Mougianis.
AUCTION COMING — Apollo Professional Cleaning will present an auction of Ohio State University memorabilia from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 31. Auction items include an autographed photo and jersey of Archie Griffin, a signed national championship football by Jim Tressel and more. All proceeds from the auction go to the United Way of Jefferson County. Helping to plan the event are, from left, Ross Gallabrese, president of the United Way; Dale Featheringham of Featheringham Auctions, who will serve as auctioneer; Anthony Mougianis, owner of Apollo Professional Cleaning and United Way 2013 campaign chairman; and Nancy Jo Grim, executive director of the United Way. Dale Featheringham from Featheringham Auctions will be the auctioneer for the event.
"People have legitimate needs and every dollar helps. The United Way does so many things and I get so much more of a thrill doing this than just selling the items. This is a gift to help so many for a long time," said Mougianis.
"I just think this is a wonderful way to start (this year's campaign) and springboard donations ahead early," said Mougianis.
He said his theme for this year's campaign is "Let's Do Something Great," which Mougianis said is drawn from an OSU saying. He added that he encourages the "wonderful people in this county to help this organization."
"When you help there is nothing more noble and humble. The epitome of leadership is synonymous with a desire to serve," said Mougianis.
Among the items up for auction, he said his favorites are the autographed photo and football jersey of Archie Griffin, and a national championship football signed by Jim Tressel. Other items include photos, murals, videos, clothing and even an OSU breakfast cereal.
"Life is all about different cycles and I've reached another step in mine. Now, it's time to pass this memorabilia to someone else and to help the United Way at the same time," said Mougianis.
He stressed the entire amount raised through the auction will be donated to the United Way and its services.
"Anthony has gone above and beyond the regular role of a campaign chairman. It's so generous," said Nancy Jo Grim, executive director of the United Way of Jefferson County.
Ross Gallabrese, United Way president, agreed.
"This is Anthony's personal collection, and his willingness to allow it to be auctioned to help the United Way says much about his generosity and his desire to make this year's campaign a success," Gallabrese said.
"We can never pay back, the past is gone. We can only pay forward," said Mougianis, quoting Archie Griffin.
