Pasta dinner to aid mishap victim
WELLSBURG - A spaghetti dinner will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Wellsburg Moose Lodge to raise funds for Dearl "Butch" Kearns, a local man who was injured in an auto accident.
The cost is $6, with takeout available. There also will be entertainment, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and a 50-50 drawing.
Boosters to hold Night at the Races
WELLSBURG - The Brooke High School Football Boosters will hold their first Night at the Races at 7:30 p.m. March 24 at the Wellsburg Elks Lodge at 834 Charles St.
Admission is $10 and includes all food and drinks for the evening. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.
But those interested in "owning" a horse in the unique fundraiser should make their "purchase" by Saturday by calling Bernie Elliott, (304) 737-2782; Carla Morris, (304) 670-3428; Eberle Lazear, 670-3432; or Beth Green, (304) 374-9137 as soon as possible.
During the event videotapes of horse races will be shown, with the horses' "owners" and those who place wages on them standing a chance to win cash, depending on the races' outcome.
The cost to "purchase" a horse is $20, which includes admission, food and drinks.
There also will be a Chinese auction, 50-50 drawing and door prizes.
The Brooke High School Football Boosters provide pre-game meals to the team, pay a portion of the cost of chartered buses on which players travel and clothing worn to assemblies and for warmups.
Anyone can join the group, which meets at 6 p.m. each Tuesday during the season.
Free assistance there for veterans
The Wheeling field office of the West Virginia Department of Veteran Assistance, also known as the Wheeling Vet Center, offers free counseling and other assistance to area veterans in filing for state and federal veterans benefits at the following locations.
Staff will be available on the second Tuesday of each month at the Weirton Job Service Office, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.; Brooke County Senior Center, from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.; and Wellsburg Elks Lodge, 834 Charles St., from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
They also will be available on the second Thursday of each month at the New Cumberland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post from 11 a.m. to noon and the Chester American Legion Post from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Relay for Life
kickoff dinner set
WELLSBURG - A kickoff dinner for the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held at 6 p.m. March 27 at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall on 12th Street.
Anyone interested in participating in the annual fundraiser, which will be held June 2-3 at Brooke High School, is welcome.

Church to hold fish fry on Fridays
WEIRTON - St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Three Springs Drive will be holding a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Friday through March.
The cost is $6 for for a fish dinner that includes a choice of cole slaw, macaroni and cheese or haluski or $6.50 for a fish sandwich one of the above sides.
Church is selling lunches Thursday
WELLSBURG - Christ Episcopal Church at 1014 Main St. will be selling roast beef sandwich lunches Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The cost is $6.50 for the lunch, which includes sandwich, chips, pickle, dessert and beverage.

Sponsors sought for ward reunion
WELLSBURG - Organizers of the Wellsburg 1st Ward Reunion are seeking sponsors for the event, which is set for June 29-July 1 to coincide with the city's weeklong slate of Independence Day events.
Plans call for the reunion to include a hot dog roast and other food, karaoke, games and other activities.

Indoor gardening tips offered
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service will hold a workshop on indoor gardening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Brooke Hills Park clubhouse.
WVU Extension Agent Norm Schwertfeger will share some "tried-and- true" methods for growing vegetable plants and flowers from seed indoors.
He will discuss the type of soil and lighting needed, the cost benefits of indoor gardening and what must be done to enable indoor plants to be transplanted outside later.

POW's art to
WELLSBURG - The American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Museum at the Brooke County Public Library will hold a special presentation March 19 featuring the art of Joseph Vater of Pittsburgh, who was held captive at a Japanese Prisoner of War camp during World War II.
Entitled The Art of Survival, the exhibit will open at 6:30 p.m. and include artwork related to the experiences of other POWs.
Vater is the former editor of The Quan, the newsletter of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, which generated many donations to the small museum from American servicemen throughout the U.S. and their families.
He also has made contributions to the museum himself.
Established by local veteran Ed Jackfert, the museum relates the experiences of 2,700 Americans and Filipinos captured by the Japanese while defending the Philippine Islands against invasion.
Many were forced to walk the infamous Bataan Death March, during which hundreds of Americans and thousands of Filipinos died. About half perished in prison camps, hellships and as laborers for the Japanese.
Wellsburg Elks to hold wine tasting
WELLSBURG - Wellsburg Elks Lodge 1553 will hold its Seventh Annual Wine Tasting Social from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 31.
Tickets for the fundraiser are $10 each and include appetizers and wine glass for samplings from 20 winemakers from the tri-state area. A Chinese auction and 50-50 raffle also will be held. Tickets will be available at the lodge in advance or on the night of the event.

PTSA welcomes new members
WELLSBURG - A newly formed Parent-Teacher-Student Association at Franklin Primary School welcomes new members and will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the school.
It is the first at the school to involve pupils, who will be involved in community service projects, said Kaili Ridgely, the group's president.
