Bread Basket sees growing need

March 8, 2012
The Herald-Star

The Weirton-based Community Bread Basket Board of Directors monthly meeting for February produced several need issues.

Program Administrator Tara Sheperd reported 148 people, representing 318 in homes in the service area, came seeking food in January.

"This is triple the number from 2011," she said. "The need is increasing as there are more people out of work. More people being out of work complicated things, as some of these people were actually donors to Community Bread Basket in the past. Now these same folks are seeking help with food and utilities. Also, the amount of food received from the USDA has been reduced."

The Community Bread Basket is a faith-based outreach supported by individuals and congregations in the surrounding area.

Need for volunteers and donations of food and funds is at an all-time high, they said.
